FJ‐BLT is well experienced in research, development and testing in the field of agricultural engineering and renewable raw
materials. The institute is a notified body of the EC and OECD for tractors and agricultural machineries. FJ‐BLT has gained a
well known and leading position in the research of liquid and solid biofuels. FJ‐BLT is well experienced in international
collaboration. In total, 39 international funded projects were carried out since 1995. FJ‐BLT is well established in the
international scientific network of agricultural engineering and member of many organizations, like EurAgEng, ENGAGE,
ENTAM, …

FJ‐BLT (former name “Federal Institute of Agricultural Engineering”) was established in 1947 as an Institute of the Federal
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management. In 2005, BLT was merged with the agricultural
college “Francisco Josephinum” to the Higher Federal Education and Research Institute of Agriculture, Agricultural‐
Engineering and Food‐Technology “Francisco Josephinum” (FJ‐BLT). The new administration unit is a public institution with
the legal status of a subordinate agency of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water
Management. The joint marketing of our services is done under the logo “FJ (Francisco Josephinum) Wieselburg”, which is
accompanied by the BLT. The short term “BLT” stands for the R & D division of the administration unit and is the acronym of
BIOMASS | LOGISTICS | TECHNOLOGY.

The total number of the BLT staff was 48 in 2009, 21 of which are researchers and technicians.

The main tasks of the BLT can be summarized in the following points:

• Research and development in the field of agricultural engineering and renewable resources.
• Testing of agricultural vehicles, machines, implements, technical equipment and procedures
• Agricultural working techniques including housekeeping and ergonomic workplace design.
• Education and advanced training of agricultural engineers.
• Advising of the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry Environment and Water Management and other public institutions.

Topical research and test activities are:

• Studies in relation to the Common Agrarian Policy especially the working time requirements in different regions
• Machinery for hill side farming
• Agricultural logistics
• EC and OECD tests of tractors / notified body
• Safety and comfort tests of tractors and agricultural machineries
• Agro mechatronics
• Energetic and non‐energetic use of biomass, biofuels and products from renewable materials
• Type tests of heating systems running on biogenic fuels
