The Estación de Mecánica Agrícola (EMA) is a Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food's official laboratory for testing agricultural tractors and machinery. EMA was founded in 1904.

EMA is accredited by the Spanish Ministries of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Science and Technology:

  • To perform tests related to national approval of engine power and fuel consumption on agricultural tractors and its protective structures
  • To authorise registration in the Official Registries of Agricultural Machinery of EC type-approved tractors and its structures
  • To apply Directives and Regulations to agricultural and forestry tractors (permissible external sound levels, permissible maximum laden weight, braking devices, etc.)
  • To carry out:
    • Driving seat tests on agricultural tractors and machinery
    • Vibration and noise level tests on motocultors
    • Power take off drive shafts guards tests on agricultural tractors and machinery according to EN-UNE 1152 standard-
  • To perform partial Directives of 74/150/EC frame Directive related to type-approval of agricultural tractors

EMA is also accredited by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to apply the OECD Codes for agricultural and forestry tractors:

  • a) Codes 1 and 2 for the official testing of agricultural and forestry tractor performance
  • b) Codes 3, 4, 6, 7 y 8 for the official testing of protective structures on wheeled (including narrow-track) and tracklaying agricultural and forestry tractors (ROPS)
  • c) Code 5 for the official measurement of noise at the driving position on agricultural and forestry tractors

Other EMA activities are:

  • Falling-object and operator protective structures (FOPS and OPS) according to ISO and national standards
  • Milking machines and milk cooling bulk tanks tests
  • Since 2001, EMA has become full member of the ENTAM

The Central Laboratory for Irrigation Equipment and Materials Testing (CENTER) has been created by the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs within the National Centre for Irrigation Technology.
In the Laboratory, irrigation equipment is tested in accordance with national and international standards, thereby enabling an objective comparison to be made between materials intended for the same purpose, creating greater transparency within the sector and increasing end users´ confidence in the materials available.
Work at the Laboratory is carried out under the guidelines established by a quality system based on the UNE-EN-ISO/IEC 17025 standard (“General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”), thereby ensuring both the competence management of the facilities and the technical capacity of the same.
The Laboratory is provided with all test benches required to characterise the irrigation system elements most commonly found in supply networks (meters, hydrants, regulating valves, isolating valves, check valves, air valves, filters, sprinklers, sprayers, emitters and emitting pipes).
